Summary of Duties

  • Perform setups on saws, includes setting feed rate, adjusting bar feeder, selecting optimal blades, adjusting for adequate guard width, and making coolant adjustment. Making sure correct material used is critical because of high cost of some materials, especially honed.
  •  Operate one or more saws, cutting parts to required length. The required length may not be the part length on the print because we normally need to allow material so subsequent operations have adequate material to work with. Make sure parts are cut square, and material use is optimal.
  •  Make sure material and cut parts are identified, and maintain any required material traceability.
  • Need to be licensed forklift driver and experienced in using overhead crane. Need to be knowledgeable of rigging long bar stock, use of slings, etc., to safely handle material, and inspection of slings.
  • Meet production output goals, insure quality of all cut parts, maintain production records, quality records, data logs, etc.
  • Read blueprints, routers, work orders, and inspection directions to determine job specifications and tolerances. Verify conformance of parts produced to specifications using precision inspection equipment, and record results.
  • Closely monitor assigned machine. Leaving assigned machine or not being alert to monitor the machine while it is running could cause scrap of expensive parts, expensive machine damage, or injury to you or other employees.
  • Follow all company policies, department standard operating procedures, safety procedures, quality procedures, ISO procedures, and any other verbal or written instructions.
  • Work in a safe manner, without endangering yourself or other employees. Coach any employee using unsafe practices, and/or alert the area supervisor, safety committee member, or member of management. Use all appropriate PPE (personal protective equipment) for job.
  • Ability and willingness to work overtime, weekends, or holidays, to support production requirements.
  • Provide training for new department members in the setup and operation of saws, as well as use and care for precision measurement equipment.
  • Perform routine preventative maintenance on machines operated, and inform supervisor of any other maintenance needs that exceed your ability.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

Education/Training/Experience

  • Prefer high school diploma or GED.
  • Prefer trade school training, or sufficient on the job training to achieve primary duties.

Physical Requirements

  • Frequently handles and lifts material ranging from 5 to 25 pounds, occasionally up to 50 pounds. Any loads over 50 pounds, or more than you can safely handle, MUST be done with the help of another employee or with a crane.
  • Exposure to heat, cold, dust, and noise, oil or coolant mist is routine. Overhead doors are frequently open which allows any outdoor pollens, allergens, etc. inside buildings.
  • Requires standing most of the time, plus frequent bending and reaching to operate saws. Frequent use of both hands/arms, working together to load bar stock, change blades, or to make adjustments is required. Precise dexterity needed with both hands to make fine adjustments to saw, or for use of delicate precision measurement equipment. Occasional stooping or climbing is required.
  • Must have good vision, for both close up work, and distance. Saw or control may have some small print that must be read accurately. Measurement equipment may have small print, or fine graduations that must be read accurately.
  • Must be able to hear and understand verbal instructions, plus hear emergency instructions.

Job Skills/Tools Required

  • Thorough understanding of saws, cutting process, blades, and sawing speeds required. Correct identification of materials is critical to insure we do not cut the wrong material, which could be a very expensive mistake.
  • Basic shop math for determining part lengths, tolerance limits, counting parts, calculating saw speeds, using ratios, or percentages, etc.
  • Ability to read and understand complex blueprints.
  • Ability to understand written or oral instructions, safety rules, company policies, etc.
  • Ability to accurately use common inspection equipment such as scale, tape measure, calipers, and possibly micrometers.
  • Must have tool box with basic tools, which includes wrenches, tape measure, 6” scale, 0-6” calipers, screwdrivers, hammers, crescent wrench, pliers, etc., and be willing to add other tools that are not on this list to accomplish assigned jobs.

Personal Skills

  • Ability to interface with supervisor, support personnel, and management.
  • Ability to train other employees in safe and efficient methods of sawing.
