Summary of Duties

  • Perform setups on manual lathes, includes selecting optimal standard or nonstandard tooling, required fixtures, and any machine attachments.
  • Operate one or more machines, running complex parts, with close tolerances, possibly with seal surfaces requiring special finishes, special threads, or extra long parts that require special settings.
  • Select and set optimum machine speeds and feeds to achieve specified part dimensions, tolerances, finishes, etc.
  • Meet production output goals, insure quality of all machined parts, maintain production records, quality records, data logs, etc.
  • Read blueprints, routers, work orders, and inspection directions to determine job specifications and tolerances. Verify conformance of parts produced to specifications using precision inspection equipment, and record results.
  • Closely monitor assigned machine. Leaving assigned machine or not being alert to monitor the machine while it is running could cause scrap of expensive parts, expensive machine damage, or injury to you or other employees.
  • Follow all company policies, department standard operating procedures, safety procedures, quality procedures, ISO procedures, and any other verbal or written instructions.
  • Work in a safe manner, without endangering yourself or other employees. Coach any employee using unsafe practices, and/or alert the area supervisor, safety committee member, or member of management.  Use all appropriate PPE (personal protective equipment) for job.
  • Ability and willingness to work overtime, weekends, or holidays, to support production requirements.
  • Provide training for new department members in the setup and operation of manual machines, as well as use and care for precision measurement equipment.
  • Perform routine preventative maintenance on machines operated, and inform supervisor of any other maintenance needs that exceed your ability.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.


  • Prefer high school diploma or GED.
  • Prefer trade school training, or sufficient on the job training to achieve primary duties.

Physical Requirements

  • Frequently handles and lifts material ranging from 5 to 25 pounds, occasionally up to 50 pounds. Any loads over 50 pounds, or more than you can safely handle, MUST be done with the help of another employee or with a crane.
  • Exposure to heat, cold, dust, and noise, oil or coolant mist is routine. Overhead doors are frequently open which allows any outdoor pollens, allergens, etc. inside buildings.
  • Requires standing most of the time, plus frequent bending and reaching to operate machines. Frequent use of both hands/arms, working together to operate machine or make adjustments is required.  Precise dexterity needed with both hands to make fine adjustments to machines or for use of delicate precision measurement equipment.  Occasional stooping or climbing is required.
  • Must have good vision, for both close up work, and distance. Machine dials have fine measurement marks that must be read accurately.  Measurement equipment may have small print, or fine graduations that must be read accurately.
  • Must be able to hear and understand verbal instructions, plus hear emergency instructions.

Job Skills/Tools Required

  • Basic shop math for determining part sizes, locations of part characteristics, tolerance limits, counting parts, calculating speeds and feeds, using ratios, or percentages, etc.
  • Ability to read and understand complex blueprints.
  • Ability to understand written or oral instructions, safety rules, company policies, etc.
  • Ability to accurately use common inspection equipment such as calipers, micrometers, dial or digital indicators, etc.
  • Must have tool box with basic tools, which includes wrenches, 6” scale, 0-12” calipers, and 0-6” micrometers, screwdrivers, hammers, crescent wrench, pliers, etc., and be willing to add other tools that are not on this list to accomplish assigned jobs.

Personal Skills

  • Ability to interface with supervisor, support personnel, and management.
  • Ability to train other employees in safe and efficient methods of production.
